Waldorf Red Cake

1 tsp Vinegar
1 tsp Soda
1-1/2 c White Sugar
1/2 c Shortening
2 Eggs
2 tsp Cocoa
2 oz Red Food Coloring
2-1/2 c Cake Flour
1 tsp Salt
1 c Buttermilk
1 tsp Vanilla

Mix vinegar with soda and let stand. Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat. Make paste of cocoa and a little red food coloring. Add to mixture, then add remaining food coloring. Mix cake flour and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Add previously mixed vinegar and soda; mix well. Pour into two 9-inch round cake pans and bake 30 minutes at 350. Cool. Split layers in half lengthwise. Frost with frosting recipe below.

Waldorf Red Cake Frosting

1 c Sweet Milk
3 tbsp Flour
1 c Butter
1 c Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla

Mix milk with flour and cook in double boiler until thickened, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla. Mix small amount of cooked misture to butter mixture; gradually add the rest. Beat at high speed for two minutes. Frost the four layers.
